For some time I had been looking for the right piece of wood to make a coffee table out of. San Diego is not the best resource for a good, cheap piece of reclaimed wood but luckily San Luis Obispo is! The piece of wood came from an old lumber yard in Santa Margarita just outside of San Luis Obispo. As you can see it was in excellent condition to begin with and the shape is just dreamy, but it did have some water stains and needed a bit of love to get it to what I was envisioning!
I sanded the piece down for a smooth-to-the-touch feel and finished it with a clear polyurethane finish. I originally intended to stain the wood as it was a lot lighter than I had hoped, but because the wood was reclaimed solid oak, the stain actually made it too dark and I found that the clear finish alone really brought out its natural beauty! To finish the coffee table, I found four black hairpin legs, (Aaron~ my boyfriend) screwed them into the bottom and it was done!!
